How to turn on join codes for your school

Written by Jimmy Joslin

Who can turn on this feature? Only owners and admins on a school account.

Join codes let teachers add students to a class with a code, link or QR code, without entering emails or sending invites. They're turned off by default. As a school owner or admin, you decide whether teachers at your school can use them.

Read the sections below before you switch them on. Join codes don't suit every school.

What changes when you turn on join codes

  • Teachers see a Join code button on the Students tab of every class.

  • Students who are new to Atomi create their own account when they join. They choose the name and email they sign up with. Atomi doesn't check either against your school's records or email domain.

  • Students who join are added to your school account and the teacher's class straight away.

  • A code works for one hour and allows up to 100 joins. Anyone who has the code in that time can join, so teachers should check their class list afterwards.

  • Join codes are for students only. Teachers still need to be added to your school account.

When to leave join codes off

If your school syncs classes from your student information system (SIS) through Wonde, Clever or OneRoster, we recommend leaving join codes off.

The sync keeps each synced class in sync with your SIS. When a class changes in your SIS, the next sync removes any student in that Atomi class who isn't in the SIS class. That includes students who joined with a code. They keep their Atomi account but lose access to the class unless it has also been updated in your SIS.

If your school uses single sign-on

Join codes work with single sign-on (SSO). Students don't set an Atomi password when they join. Next time they log in, Atomi sends them to your school login.

Ask students to join with their school email, so their school login matches their Atomi account.

When join codes work well

  • Your teachers manage their own class lists in Atomi.

  • A student needs access today, before your next import or sync.

  • Some classes are outside your SIS, such as a Study Skills class or an extension group. If only some of your classes sync, teachers can use join codes in the ones that don't. Let them know which classes are safe to use.

Turn on join codes

  1. Go to Settings and select the School Account tab.

  2. Switch Join by code on.

Teachers will now see a Join code button on the Students tab of their classes.

Turn off join codes

Follow the same steps and switch the toggle off. Teachers won't be able to create new codes, and any active codes stop working straight away. Students who've already joined stay in their classes.
