Getting started with insights

What you'll find on each tab in insights, where the data comes from and how to turn an insight into a revision task.

Written by Sarah Arrowsmith

Insights connects your students' learning and activity data, so you can see who needs you first and act while it still matters. It sits at the reporting end of your teaching: How is everyone tracking, and what should I do next?

Where to find insights

Click the Insights menu item in the top navigation. Use the All years, All faculties, All classes dropdowns to view a class, several classes, a faculty or a whole year level. To change the time period, use the date range dropdown.

Who can access insights?

Teachers, admins and account owners can access insights.

Students and parents only have access to activity insights, where they can see their own activity data, not the school's. Personal and family accounts keep their existing activity insights.

If your school's on a free trial, you'll see an upgrade page instead.

The Learning tab

The Learning tab shows how students are tracking, based on their marks across Atomi quizzes and assessments. You'll see:

  • Summary cards with average marks and how many students sit above and below your school's mark thresholds, plus the change from the previous period

  • A Student distribution chart plotting each student by marks and time spent, so you can spot patterns at a glance

  • A Class performance panel grouping your classes by the same thresholds

  • A Marks table with each student's year level, average mark, class average, tasks, overdue tasks, last active date, top strengths and improvement areas

Use the Show me dropdown to switch the Marks table between students and classes.

The Activity tab

The Activity tab shows how students are engaging with Atomi: questions answered, lessons completed and hours spent. A chart compares the current period with the previous one, and you can break the numbers down by student or class.

If you've used insights before, this is the same activity data you know. Read it alongside the Learning tab and you can tell the difference between a student who needs more practice on a topic and one who hasn't been active.

The Next steps tab

The Next steps tab turns the data into a list of who needs help, ordered by priority. Each insight groups students who need similar support and shows:

  • A priority level (Critical, High)

  • The class, year level, subject and topic it relates to

  • How many of those students already have a task assigned

Click the View students button on an insight to see who's included and how they're tracking against the class median. From there you can assign each student a pre-filled revision task: the recommended lessons and an intro message are ready to go, and you review and edit everything before it sends. Nothing reaches a student without you.

Every insight has Useful and Not useful buttons, so you can tell us whether it was worth acting on.

Where the data comes from

  • Marks are the weighted average of each student's Atomi quizzes and assessments, using the same logic as mark book.

  • Activity is based on students' usage of Atomi.

  • Next steps compares each student's recent marks with their class, then recommends Atomi lessons matched to the areas where they need the most practice.

The learning and activity data is designed to update daily. In some cases there may be a short delay before the latest data appears.

Insights points you to who needs attention next. For the full record of marks, completion and results, head to mark book.
